System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) enables you to deploy and manage virtual machines and services across multiple hypervisor platforms, including VMware ESX and ESXi hosts. In VMM, support for ESX is optimized for virtual machine and service management. VMM enables you to manage and provide resources from multiple hypervisors and make the resources available to private cloud deployments, all from a common user interface and common command-line interface (CLI). Let me explain how to Add VMware ESXi Host into Microsoft SCVMM in this article.
Pre-requistes for Adding VMware ESXi host into Microsoft SCVMM
- The VMware vCenter Server that manages the ESX hosts that you want to add must already be under VMM management. Take a look at my article to learn How to Add vCenter Server 6.5 in Microsoft SCVMM 2016
- ESXi hosts that you want to add and manage must be running a supported version of ESXi software
- As similar to SCVMM, you can add Run AS account to add ESXi host.
- when you added the vCenter Server into SCVMM ,you selected the option to communicate with the ESX hosts in secure mode, VMM requires a certificate and public key for each managed ESX/ESXi host. This enables all supported management tasks. You can either use the self-signed certificate that VMware created when ESX was installed on the hosts, or a certificate from a trusted certification authority.
How to Add VMware ESXi Host into Microsoft SCVMM
In the previous article, We have added the vCenter Server into Microsoft SCVMM , which is one of prerequisites for adding ESXi host into VMM. You can see the 2 vCenter Servers which are added in the SCVMM inventory.
Open the Fabric workspace, On the Home tab, in the Add group, click Add Resources, and then click VMware ESX Hosts and Clusters.
Click on Browse to make use of existing Run As account , if created already or to create New Create Run As Account.
You can make use of existing Run As account , if created already or click on Create Run As Account. I have already created an Run As account “ESXi Root”. I am going to use that account as Run As account for adding ESXi host into SCVMM.
On the Target resources page, Select the vCenter Server name from the drop-down option in VMware vCenter Server. The available ESX hosts for the selected vCenter Server are listed. If the ESX hosts are clustered, the cluster name is listed together with the cluster nodes. Select the checkbox to add all hosts in the ESXi cluster.
In the Host settings page, Select the host group from drop-down, where you want to assign the selected ESXi hosts into, and then click Next.
Review the selected options and click on Finish.
Once Add ESXi host into Microsoft SCVMM task is completed, You will be able to see the ESXi cluster “Lab cluster” and ESXi hosts under the cluster.
We are also able to see and manage the virtual machines running under the added ESXi host from SCVMM.
That’s it. We are done with the task of Add VMware ESXi Host into Microsoft SCVMM. I hope this is informative for you. Thanks for Reading!!!. Be social and share it in social media, if you feel worth sharing it.
